Very interesting this comment, because US financial situation is not better...
In such difficult economical situations "secure" jobs in big companies are not secure anymore. Many companies are using this situation (necessary or not) to reduce manpower. I watched this several times, when i was an employee in a big international company. There was no need to do it, but they did anyhow.
One important point is, that in situations of downsizing also the best people quit their jobs to become an independend entrepreneur and start their own company. Leaders will see the chance of tough times like this, they have no fear and they take their lifes in their own hand.
